Ongoing web site maintenance & management
OK, you've spent the money and got yourself a web site.. That's it isn't it? NO!
A web site is like a puppy - not just for christmas, for life. You may have spent months preparing the material for your web site, once that information is live however you need to devote time to keeping that information up to date.
Web site maintenance & management covers a multitude of different tasks, here are just a few of them:
- Make sure your information is up to date:
- Review and update product information; make sure price lists etc. are current.
- If your organization doesn't generate a lot of news then consider putting a free news feed on your site that is relevant to your business sector or industry.
- If you maintain information about staff, make sure it's up to date.
- Make sure the information you provide about your products or services reflect current thinking; if for example you operate in a technology based industry where the technology is developing constantly make sure you aren't left behind.
- Keep the site design fresh, if your site hasn't been touched for a few years then the odds are it will look dated. Even if the information contained with the site is current, why not give your site a lick of paint to revive it a bit.
- Manage the information available; remove articles or documents that are no longer relevant
- Review on a regular basis site visitor stats. These stats can highlight important issues like which page areas of your site are visited the most; you may then consider devoting more time to developing such issues.
- Make sure the people who run your web servers keep on top of important issues like:
- Virus protection
- Firewall infiltration
- Keeping software patches/updates bang up to date
- Keeping machine downtime to a minimum
- Hardware upgrading & management
Web site re-development or re-design
Given that the majority of established businesses out there already have a web site, a high percentage of our day-to-day work involves the re-development or re-design of clients existing web sites.
There are many reasons for re-developing or re-designing your web site. In our experience the most common areas of re-development/re-design are:
- Giving the site a face lift
Clients that are happy with the content of their site but think it needs a more modern look then giving their site is a relatively cost effective way of improving their web site. For our own clients, applying a new site 'face' is simple, because we keep design and content separate we can quickly and easily apply a new style and design to an established web site. See "putting the face on the site" in our Implementation section.
- Complete site overhaul
Clients wanting to provide their audience with new services and facilities via their web site often look to completely overhaul their current site. In such cases we often strip the raw data or content from the existing site, re-build those elements that need rebuilding or create the new features required by the client and then bring it all back together with a new design and style.
